Pushkin Press maintains the constant aim of publishing translations of classic and contemporary European literature that changes the way you look at the world.
Although we are justly proud of our Anglo-Saxon tradition of fiction writing, we tend to ignore the paralleluniverse of European writing. Writing which expresses a sometimes quite different sensibility. European literature seems to be untrammelled by some of the traditions that make the novel tradition in English so strong - there is an ability to be freer with expressing emotion and passion that perhaps the English sensibility avoids - and yet we have so much to gain from looking at the world and ourselves from another, different standpoint. This accessibility to an alternative mindset through cultural exchange is now more relevant then ever and can only strengthen and enrich our own literary tradition.
Against all commercial odds, we choose to publish translations of young contemporary writers who we believe reflect the extraordinary qualities of the classic writers we translate and publish.
Every book published by Pushkin Press is about passion in some form or other - the passion of the enthusiast who recommended and who passed on his particular joy in the author to us and who inspired us to publish sometimes esoteric and little-known masterpieces and the passion for life and love questioning that all our authors confront and that we at Pushkin Press wish to affirm.
We are proud of every book we have produced and want to continue to publish books that will be enjoyed and at the same time will remain and linger in our readers' thoughts long after they have closed our small and beautiful volumes.
