ABOUT THE AUTHOR
ARTHUR SCHNITZLER was born in Vienna in 1862, the son of a prominent Jewish doctor, and studied medicine at the University of Vienna. In later years he devoted his time to writing and was successful as a novelist, dramatist and short story writer. Dying was written in 1895. Schnitzler’s work shows a remarkable ability to create atmosphere and a profound understanding of human motives. Schnitzler died in 1931.
ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR
ANTHEA BELL is the recipient of the Schlegel Tieck Prize for translation from German, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize in 2002 for the translation of W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz, and the 2003 Austrian State Prize for Literary Translation. She lives in Cambridge, England.
